Digital History, Intro to Digitization Project - Sep. 15, 2022
This project was part of an in-class assignment for my Digital History course. We were tasked with choosing two different pieces of ephemera that our professor, Dr. David Pettegrew, provided us with. With that, we were then told to "digitize" the objects by means of a photograph with a digital camera, a photograph with our iPhone, a scan with a scanner app (iPhone notes and ScannerPro are my personal choices), and a scan with a CZUR scanner at 250 and 300 DPI. In the end, the first image to the right is a scan of a chapter from a book describing burial practices in the catacombs of Rome, Italy. It was scanned on the CZUR scanner at 250 DPI, which provided us with a clean image of the page. We also scanned it at 300 DPI, which, on paper, is a sharper image. The last two images were taken by the iPhone camera (bottom left) and a DSLR camera (bottom right). While I have had experience in the past with digitizing documents, I had never learned or compared the functions and capabilities of different kinds of technology, let alone practiced adjusting the settings of a scanner to produce a more refined image.

Throughout my Digital History course this fall semester (2022), I have been fortunate enough to begin researching new topics surrounding the history of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. With this research, I am tasked with presenting it to the public in some kind of digital form (like a website or story map) and trying to tell a story surrounding my subject. The general topic I have chosen is the Second Capitol Expansion, which took place from the 1920s-1950s and involved the destruction of 115 properties between North and Forster Streets, which led to the inevitable construction of the PA State Museum, Archives Building, and additional office space. Through my research at the Pennsylvania State Archives and the Dauphin County Historical Society, my project will take the form of a story map.
